Ridge Augmentation
Preventing dental disease is less costly and more rewarding than correcting the problem.
One potential consequence of tooth loss is that the bone that once held the tooth in place will disintegrate, resulting in the collapse of the overlying gum tissue. The gum will then exhibit an indentation, cleft, or unevenness at the gum margins. Not only can the gum concavity look unnatural and unappealing, the indentation can compromise the look and fit of the replacement tooth. To properly address this problem, the dentist can perform a cosmetic periodontal procedure called “ridge augmentation,” which involves surgical implementation of grafted bone and/or gum tissue. The results of this procedure are very predictable and long-lasting. In order for teeth to look healthy and natural, they must be properly framed by gums with natural contours.
