At The Root Of Tooth Pain
Our family oriented practice encourages comprehensive complete care with emphasis on prevention through early detection.
In cases in which tooth decay is left untreated, bacteria may infect the tooth pulp and lead to an abscess. Symptoms include aching or throbbing pain in the tooth, sensitivity to hot or cold, chewing pain, and fever. At this point, endodontic (root canal) treatment is indicated. This involves removal of the nerve and vascular tissue (pulp) from the root and pulp chamber, as well as any associated decayed tooth structure. This allows the tooth to be spared from extraction. After the inside of the tooth is carefully shaped and cleaned, it is filled and sealed, awaiting a crown. Preserving the tooth root in this fashion helps avert the bone loss that often accompanies loss of the tooth root.
Root canal treatment is highly successful. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime. This column has been brought to you in the interest of better dental health. Our family oriented practice encourages comprehensive complete care with emphasis on prevention through early detection. Did you know? The pain associated with root canal therapy is due exclusively to the pain caused by the abscess and not the treatment, which removes the cause of the pain.
