Two minutes can be a long time if you are holding your breath. Or, it can be short time if you are eating dinner. The real question for dental patients is: Do you know how long two minutes is while you are brushing your teeth? The fact that it takes at least two minutes to thoroughly clean your teeth, whether you are using a manual toothbrush or an electric one. It takes two minutes to remove the film known as “plaque,” which contains bacteria that cause tooth decay, gingivitis, and, eventually, periodontal disease. Most of us only brush our teeth for one minute, which is not long enough to do an effective job. Take an egg timer with you the next time you brush your teeth.
