This painful disorder affects mostly women over the age of 60 and can also cause dry mouth and a loss of taste. While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact source(s) of BMS, experts speculate that 30% of cases are caused by pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, the onset of menopause, nutrient deficiency, or complications from radiation/chemotherapy. The other 70% of cases may be due to poorly fitting dentures, dry mouth, tongue thrusting, or teeth grinding. Your dentist can help diagnose and treat BMS effectively.

This condition can be improved in most cases. When applicable, patients are taught to manage BMS through practicing good oral hygiene, dietary changes and other preventive practices.
