Dental Erosion
One serious threat to teeth involves the widespread condition known as “dental erosion.”
This gradual destruction of tooth enamel can result in pain that is felt when eating or drinking hot or cold foods. It can also cause tooth discoloration and loss. Alarmingly, the primary culprit in cases of dental erosion is soft drink consumption. In the United States, where soft drink consumption has risen 1,100 percent over the past two decades, many children show signs of erosion. Some even have exposed dentin (the layer below the hard out enamel), which is typically found only in adult teeth. While all acidic foods can cause dental erosion, soda is particularly harsh because of ingredients such a phosphoric acid.
