Pregnancy And Gum Disease

During pregnancy, increased levels of progesterone may encourage the growth of certain gingivitis-causing bacteria.
Dentists have long cautioned women about “pregnancy gingivitis,” which is caused by hormonal changes and affects more than half of all pregnant women. Usually, the gum inflammation associated with pregnancy-related gum disease occurs between the second and eighth months of pregnancy, and manifests itself in gums that look red and bleed somewhat during brushing. Without conscientious attention to good oral-hygiene habits and professional dental care, this mild form of gum disease (gingivitis) can lead to a more serious form of gum disease (periodontitis). If left untreated, gum disease poses risks to babies’ health such as premature birth, low birth weight, and even full-term stillborn birth. Pregnant women have more reason than their own oral health to seek regular dental care.

There are a variety of dental problems that women are more prone to experience during pregnancy. These issues include periodontal disease, pregnancy tumors, and pregnancy gingivitis. At the office of Richard Seidler, D.D.S. - Family Dentistry, we are a highly qualified and experienced team of professionals who want you to look and feel your best. Did you know?
During pregnancy, increased levels of progesterone may encourage the growth of certain gingivitis-causing bacteria, render gum tissue more sensitive to plaque, and exaggerate the body's response to the toxins that result from plaque.
